Global app economy will be worth $143 billion by 2016

The global app economy was worth a staggering $68 billion (yes, billion) in 2013 and is projected to grow to a staggering $143 billion by 2016 as smartphone ownership soars.

The latest global survey on mobile apps and app developers, by VisionMobile Ltd., suggests there were 2.3 million app developers on the planet in 2013, 760,000 of which live in Asia.

Android continues to dominate as a platform, 71% of the 7,000 developers surveyed said they developed for Android.

Interestingly, 37% of mobile developer use HTML5 as a platform – showing an increase in developers building responsive mobile sites as well as apps.

59% of developers say they prioritise Apple’s iOS platform over any other platform, which shows that Apple apps are still seen as a trusted industry standard.

No money
For those who think app development is a lucrative business, think again. 60% of those surveyed say they live below the “app poverty” line i.e. earning less than $500 per app, per month.
It’s not steady work either, 56% of apps built are built under short-term contracts while 26% of app developers develop apps just on commission.
